Looks awesome. The under body was never factory painted? Is the oil filter OEM white or are they ac delco blue?

frankzlt1 06-20-2013 01:13 AM

Is the hood a functional air induction hood? Too bad you didn't have the era battery for it.

Thanks Frank!!!

There is a lot of debate on the underbody color. The problem is there was gray primer applied by hand some cars got a lot of gray primer and some got none. The judges expect 30% gloss black (I think it's 30%, but definitely black). I decided to have it painted to what I believe was there originally. Lots of gray primer.

Originally the filters were a white PF25. I think at some point in 1969 they changed to or from a white PF29. I have a reproduction PF25 on there right now. An original 44 year old one would deteriorate rapidly and would probably not be very good for the engine.

No, it originally had a flat hood. Cowl induction came out half way through 1969 and this car was made too early to have a cowl hood. The original flat hood is on it right now.

The battery on the car right now is a Y55. It is an original battery and it took me about a year to find one. I have a post on 69 Z/28 batteries here: http://www.z28.net/2012/07/12/y-55-delco-battery/

Also, the DZ302 shown in post #309 is not my engine. It's from one of the main guys in the Camaro Research Group - JohnZ. I was using his engine as an example for Jeff68 to see if my heat riser is on wrong.

The car is in my trailer and we're leaving at 6 am tomorrow!

jeff68 06-20-2013 11:53 AM

David-
Every heat riser I've seen has had the weight on the outboard side, and that's the way mine was originally. Definitely ask one of the 'experts' when you get there and it's a 15 minute change if you need to change it. Let us know what you find out.

Have fun!!!!

frankzlt1 06-20-2013 12:53 PM

Good luck Dave , thats a lot of great info.

Thanks Jeff. I'll look closely at all the Legends cars.

We got the car in place yesterday:

Best looking car there!

Grovlet 06-21-2013 01:58 PM

Is that another Green Car right in front? I was thinking the color was on the rare side and would help at least draw some additional attention?

Looking Good!!!

Good Luck!!

Thanks guys!!!!

Good Luck!!

That car is a blue Z but my pic probably doesn't show it well. There are other ralley green cars here though.

I didn't get judged today so it'll be judged tomorrow.

Also, the 1974 owner Larry came by this morning and spent at least 2 hours with car. I've got great pics with him in it and he really loved it.

DavidS 06-23-2013 05:35 AM

Scored a 981 out of 1000.

New England F-Bodies FTW.

Formula413 06-23-2013 05:39 AM

Damn, not too shabby for having to rush! Way to go Dave!

frankzlt1 06-23-2013 05:41 AM

Thats Fkn awesome.

frankzlt1 06-23-2013 05:46 AM

What did you lose 19 pts on?

DavidS 06-23-2013 05:52 AM

Thanks Alex!!!

We lost some points with the rushed parts....but still had the best score in the Bowtie class out of 14 cars.

The highlight though is pics of Larry in the driver's seat.

pics to folllow soon.

Mostly real small stuff...like repop hood bumpers that made the hood look a little bowed and a wrong bolt on the alternator bracket.

DAWG 06-23-2013 11:31 AM

very good score David!

That's great. So, fix a few simple things, get 1000 points next year, then start driving it?

Next year it would be in the Legends class which is 5,000 points. It's definitely a tougher class but I'm planning on trying Legends next year. I am fortunate to have the 68 and the other 69 to cruise around in....for now.

What was real nice about the show is that everybody was really trying to help each other out as much as they could. By the time the judges reviewed my car, other guys from both the Bowtie class, and Legends class had already pointed out 80% of the problems already. Also Chick stopped by and pointed out some stuff which was real nice of him.

I also got to help some guys out with some easy to correct items like swapping the horn locations around....before the judges got there. Since it's a point system, everyone seemed to be great about helping each other out. The only thing is that even though someone points something out, their advice may be incorrect based on the build date of the car.

ZFreie 06-23-2013 01:52 PM

Dave, I made a checklist for you for next years show.

1. Enter legends
2. Score a 4981
3. ??????
4. Profit

Grovlet 06-23-2013 01:52 PM

Awesome!!! Congratulations on the win!!

Thanks Nick!

I'm not sure what number 3 will end up being, but number 4 will probably end up being less than zero. Most hobbies probably work out that way, and for me it's technically interesting and it keeps me out of trouble. lol.

Car looks awesome Dave , the previous owner must have been surprised. How long did it take for them to judge the car?

Thanks Frank! He loved it and was very emotional when he was talking about the car. He said the main reason for selling it was because the Chevelle had AC and his wife (or girlfriend) was complaining about the heat since they were in Florida.

There were different sets of judges for different areas. I believe there were 7 of them. Two did the engine bay. Two did the body. One did the interior. One was checking underbody and wheels. Another did the safety check. I lost track of the time, but I think it was about an hour.

DavidS 06-24-2013 01:47 AM

Larry said he took about 500 pictures at the Camaro Nationals.

You were correct on the heat riser. I ended up getting a deduction for it. I was taking JohnZ's postings as gospel since he has a survivor car and he was a long time GM engineer during the time these cars were made.

Maybe a mistake was made and his was put on incorrectly at the factory. Survivor cars at the show had it on the same way you said your's was originally.

At least it's an easy fix.

If you don't mind sharing, It would be interesting to see the judging sheet.

Thanks Ron! I'm going to take a short break from the Z for a few weeks though since I have to get back to the Money Pit. I've got contractors running around everywhere and some stuff is really getting screwed up.

The nicest part was having Larry come see the car. He was very emotional about the car....but one thing he kept laughing about was, he said he had a lot more miles driving this car than I have. He's right. I know. I'll try the Legends class next year though and at some point....headers, real tires, real shocks, and driving.

There should be 2 to 4 (out of 8, not including the car-dealer, Dave Brock) of the former owners coming to check it out next year.

I posted this pic already, but didn't explain it....the dude on the left is Larry (bought the Z in 1974), the dude on the right with the extra-wide grin and the Chevy shirt is me...and the chick with the iroc-z tattoo on her neck is on the far right. Larry didn't send any pictures of her tat, but if anyone is really interested, I can ask Larry to send a pic.

I keep looking for a chic on the far right! I can only assume it's the blonde lady and in which case i'd rather see more of your car!!

Yep....HA HA HA....a little on the wide side, but who am I to judge.

Larry said that if my wife really loved me, she would get a neck tattoo with a green 69 Z, but I really don't see that happening. Ever. Not that I actually want it to happen though.

DavidS 08-12-2013 04:47 PM

One of the guys in Mike's shop, Kevin, sent me a real nice image he made of the Z:
