Hit some downed powerlines, need some suggestions.
Last night the Pats won. After the game, I was headed back to my home in the snow, taking my time going 5 under the speed limit and about 10 minutes from my door, I saw some headlights swerving erratically all over the road. Then they ran off road and came to rest pointing perpendicular to the highway. Then I saw the explosion from the power lines and thought, "sucks to be that guy, I'll call the police for him in a minute."
Just then I heard "WHABBACAAKKIAAAAAA, THUMP THUMP WHABABBBBACVVVAKA." and realized that I was without a headlight and dragging something terribly heavy with my car. I brought her to a stop, hit the flashers and realized that not only did dipshit over there hit a power pole, but the lines went all over my side of the road and I hit every one of them in a less graceful Back to the Future style. After further inspection, I had 3 separate lines in my front bumper and out from under the rear of my car. I hopped on the phone to call 911 and traced back the 20-40 yards of line to find some of it still attached to a rather large broken section of the pole. I walked across the highway to see the other driver (who was visibly drunk) muttering some bullshit about losing control of his Explorer (up hill in the snow!) and hit the pole. Hit is an understatement. He OBLITERATED the pole. It was a stump in the ground and his drivers side of the car was demolished. He kept asking me if I thought he could drive it home like that. Nope, you're waiting for the cops man. Which, speak of them, was the QUICKEST response for 6 police cars and 2 fire trucks I have ever seen. It took them a while to piece it together and to realize that I was merely the unlucky motorist in this one. After some questioning and standing in the snow for an hour and a half, they gave me my report and I went on my way. To my knowledge, they never gave the guy a sobriety test either. Heres the initial aftermath, cell phone pictures. I'll put up better shots later this afternoon. Oh, and for all who are wondering- I'm alright, a little shaken up because of the lines and sparks from the contact with my car. I wasn't electrocuted or hurt (thankfully!!), just a crazy freak accident that Allstate is going to rape some fool over. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...8_890889_n.jpg The suv, hard to see but everything from the drivers door back is caved in. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._4667898_n.jpg Steel wires are no 'effin joke. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._5462853_n.jpg Pass side ground effect http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._2749652_n.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._8255788_n.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._2872878_n.jpg You can still see some of the metal twine stuck in the bumper. It could've been A LOT worse and I'm thankful to not have been electrocuted or anything. Another day of exciting life, now off to survey the damage in the morning light. If anyone knows of a reputable, dedicated, and passionate classic car body shop in the Westport, Fall River, Dartmouth, Marion, Mattatpoisett, and general Southcoast MA area, please give me a name and/or number so I can have them challenge what will probably be a subpar estimate from the insurance adjuster. I'll even go as far as Boston if they're that good. |
Ouch, yeah that sucks dude.
Wish I knew of any shops in your area. Everyone I know is all out Worcester way. |

damn that sucks but glad ur ok..so the guy didnt get in trouble??

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys, thats exactly the information I needed. Especially since some of you have seen the quality of work. I have one estimate scheduled tomorrow and will hopefully get to see APC in the next day or two as well. Cross your fingers that it doesn't end up totaled. I'd love to fix it myself, but with the short window of 30 days (time allowed for the rental) I don't think I could get all of the work done in time and it'll become a poor financial decision. I just hate the thought of a clean car going to a pick and pull over damage that isn't that significant.
I suppose I could just buy it back and sell it, but even that takes time that I don't have... Fuckin' aggravating. |
If it does gen totaled you can buy I back and just have it fixed if you want. In mass anything over 10 years old (unless it's commercial iirc) doesn't need to have a salvage title.
On an older car all totaled means is they aren't going to give you more than the cars worth to fix it. Only down side is that until you have new pics taken by ins co (checkpoint inspection like when first insured usually) if something else happens they wont give you anything for it. Trust me, been in the industry for a long time and even dealt with similar situation before I was. I was out cruising around on my 19th birthday (looong time ago lol) in my 68. Stopped at a light and a kid in a baretta drove right into the back end of me. Well, ins co totalled the car. I bought it back fixed it up some and just kept on cruising. No salvage title or anything. No loss on ins or registration either. They just won't let you have full coverage until it's officially repaired. Even if you buy something over 10 years old from the salvage auctions in mass you don't get a salvage title. Only the newer cars have to deal with that. So, food for thought. |
Oh, and another thought, if they try to total it you can argue the amount. As long as the car is pretty clean, which it looks to be from the pics, and you keep your cool when you debate the amount you can try and talk them out of totaling it.
My 87, orange car in my sig, had a bunch of tree branch damage from an ice storm a couple years back. They wrote $2,200 on the estimate, then tried to total it and send me a check for $700. I laughed at them, spoke to a couple different people and explained how the car has had such and such done to it and is worth far more than a stock uncared for example. They eventually caved, sent the full check for the appraisal, and politely told me not to ask for any supplements lol. Sometimes that works though. But, not always. Best way is to have an appraisal for value in hand and insure the car for that value. Otherwise it can be a pain. |
my car was going to be totaled. i gave them a stack of receipts for the engine/swap and various other shit at the appraisal. dont know if you have anything along those line in that car but the 10k in receipts the guy saw swayed his judgment.

thats sucks, glad your ok tho. good luck and hope it gets fixed right!

Insurance adjuster just called too. They should be able to see me sometime tomorrow-Tuesday. Damn holidays. They did state that they were going to go after the other jerks insurance since this was a cause and effect accident. I expressed my concern that I was goin gto be lowballed for my car because of its age and firmly stated that this isn't your ordinary 20+ year old car. With any luck, receipts and due dilligence will help. We'll see how this goes. I'm headed to APC this afternoon for my own estimate and to check out the facility. The fellow I spoke with has 4 2nd gens. Thanks for the recomendation, it definitely sounds like the kind of place I want to do business with. |
Good luck man, sorry for the misfortune
