Header emission test
is it possible to pass the sniffer test with headers on a stock lt1?
i went through hell last year because my car failed emissions (ended up being tested wrong) i just dont want to go through it again can it pass without the egr, air and cats?? or should i try to leave everything on somehow?? let me know what you think thanks |
i thought that mass only did the plug in test now but you can get it tuned so that it will pass.

Subscribing,
my 95 Z inspection ended in June 08..... Last Winter I converted to a Duel Cat Y-Pipe from a 97 SS and added a set of SPL headers that matched. The car needs to be inspected ( someday ) and I'm curious to see if your will pass. You should try to leave everything on. I've had several SBC's pass the 'sniffer' test with everything removed - except for a CAT. I have never gotten a cat-less engine to pass a smog test. I've tried slipping a hollowed Cat by places a couple times and they always fail it. :D |
im looking to do a dual cutout right after the headers on the ory, and then have cats somewhere after the Y , but im not sure if everything is gonna fit?? i might just leave all the air, egr and all the o2s on
RI puts it on the sniffer if its OBD1 so i cant tune it to pass (i wish i could) |
if you have a catted y and the cats are close enough to get some heat in them you should be ok as long as you get it tuned for the long tubes if it flunks at first
|
who sells a y pipe with all the emission stuff??
|
most of the time its the same company as the header manufacture
|
OK well a 1995 vehicle cant be plugged in and regardless if the engine light is on or not they cant fail you IF you have all the required emissions equipment and thats if you goto a douche. But if you goto a guy that will really just check safety(wich you should do!!!!) then you'll be fine. i have NUTHING emissions related on my car ORY headers and a loud ass cat back. i passed and i had bad ball joints. guy let me slide cuz he knew i was gunna run right out and fix em. i HATE driving with bad front end pieces! So id make sure all your safety shit is good. ebrake lights horn wipers and front end. and just go to a guy whos decent and your good.

i think i got the y pipe all figured out, i thought that the o2 bungs were in the y pipe when they are on the headers, so thats figured out,
now if i can just find someplace to put a cat, pizza did u have a cat when u tested? |
they way they do it now is they plug into the OBDII port and it scans thru the computer so it comes down to as long as you dont have any check engine codes and you dont go to a guy that is going to go thru and check you emissions stuff your fine...1995 and older are exempt from emission testing
|
1995 and older are not exempt from emission testing!! at least in RI, the OBD2 they plug in like u said, but obd1 cars they put on a dyno and emissions test it with the sniffer, in RI i must add
|
ohhh yea your in ri i forgot lol sorry
|
in mass they dont worry about emissions if its 95 an older?
|
yea they started that last october
|
BUT They have to pass a visual test. and No i did not have a Cat hence the ORY. off road Y pipe. if you goto a younger kid that does stickers near you youll be fine.
|
They still use the Dyno's in RI are you sure?
|
I think we need 94 mike on this one he has a ORY I think

I've been dodging the sniffer in my Berlinetta for over 11 years with my Berlinetta. The year my 355 was first installed was the first year they started the sniffer test in RI and it hasn't been legally inspected since. It turned 25 and got it's Antique plate this year. ( Still hasn't been legally inspected ! :D |
^ now thats the way to do it!

RI sucks i wish they were like mass and no sniffer test, there is no way around it |

when i failed last march my car was put into the system as failed, so where ever i took it to get inspected it would come up as failed.
the vin was scanned and put into the computer but the real PITA came when i received a letter in the mail, stating that i must pass an inspection within 30 days or turn my plates in or face a $500 fine. i got to find the letter i have it somewhere!! and to top everything off when i did pass, the guy put the wrong sticker on the car, somethin happened with the computer printing out stickers, and now i have an inspection sticker for a suzuki!!!! WTF!! i had 30 days to pass after the car failed or turn my plates in (or pay fine), there are petitions or appeals that i was considering but it was just a big hassle idk how long you can go in RI without an inspection with this new system, there is no way around it! |
this is all just more ways for the state to make more money off our asses
|
yup exactly!!
|
what else do i need to get with PS LTs and Y pipe, if i am gonna be keeping all the emissions
|
RI does suck, I have a 94z that passed in april of this year. I have shorty headers with a high flow cat and the only reason i passed is because i kept all my emission shit, and i got a sticker with no problem.
|
yea i def plan on keeping all my emissions and adding 2 cats in the y pipe, where is your cat??
|
This is a true story......
My 95 Z had a stock exhaust to till the 3" cat back. A cut-out was welded inline and the intermediate pipe continued to the muffler & rectangle Z28 Tips. Shortly after buying the car and getting it inspected the Cat Clogged and had to be gutted out. A couple years later my car needs another sticker so I give it to a buddy. They put my car on the dyno and used it to get stickers for 2 other cars. My car was 3rd and by that time it was to warm and failed. The car sat for awhile and when it was cool it was back on the dyno and it passed. ( WITH hollow Cat.) All other smog system parts were installed on the car. ( That dude has been out of business so I don't mind telling the story ! ) ( years later ) When I replaced my rotted Cat-Back last spring and installed the headers and I made sure that it had all It's Smog equipment re-installed 'cause if it don't pass in RI: your screwed. 30 days after it fails the registration is pulled. That was no big deal really; The reinstatement fee was only $50....Yes $50. That fine was raised all the way to $500 last spring. ( Right before I upgraded the exhaust ! ) Once the car turns 25 year old you can do whatever you want to it, but before then be sure to keep all your Smog parts ! :D |

Until you get caught ! :11poke: |
i always thought the cars do better with emissions when they are hot? before i got mine tested for a second time i took it on a very SPIRITED DRIVE!!! to make sure it was hot
|
Warm is better than cold.
I'm guessing it had something to do with the cat being empty. :D |
