No luck whatsoever....

with mere days left before my sister in-law squeaks out our newest family member my brother calls me with a question. comes over and I here it.....

told him to change the oil (reason he was coming over) and it sounds a little better, but this is what we hear.

hard to hear but I think I hear a RAP RAP sound?
not good! might be a main bearing!

ZFreie 07-22-2012 01:22 PM

That does sound like something in the lower end. What did he do to it this time? lol

smokinss 07-22-2012 02:00 PM

Just a fyi check your exhaust manifold gaskets. Made that mistake once before!!!

My84Z 07-22-2012 02:27 PM

That doesn't sound good how is oil pressure? Did he change the oil regularly?

DemonWithin99 07-22-2012 05:03 PM

Yeah everything's tight as far as gaskets, oil pressure was ok at this point he had just started it after oil change in this vid.

It was another 98 motor so I feared this would happen, just not this soon. He has only driven it normally back and forth to work, made the quabbin cruise with us and went down to north Carolina back in Feb. It's been running fine, until the other night.

We're going camping in VT next weekend and this just makes us change plans a bit. Lucky for him I just got the truck so he'll have something to drive. I'll be doing more hunting for a motor so if anyone knows someone with something let me know. This time he's not buying a motor without me.

My84Z 07-22-2012 06:51 PM

I meamt if he has been changing the oil normaly what oil is he using? Very strange to have two motors do the same thing in short times. I would lean towards something he is doing like not changing oil or not watching the oil level and it getting low eithout him knowing as ls1's can consume oil.

DemonWithin99 07-23-2012 03:27 AM

No he's been changing it with nothing but Mobil 1. All he ever uses, changes it at my house every time he does.

941LE 07-23-2012 02:09 PM

I think John was getting at how often does he change his oil. How low does the lvl get when or if he checks his oil.

DemonWithin99 07-23-2012 03:17 PM

ok without reading into it I did say he's been changing it but if will help clarify when one changes oil it's been after 250miles, 1000miles, then 2500-3000 miles since this motor has been in. so at least 4times in the last 6 months. has been holding pressure steadily.

it sounds like the typical 98' LS1 issue he had with the last motor only it hasn't let go yet. I'm sure if he continues to drive it, it'll blow up.

Formula413 07-23-2012 09:20 PM

I would have Don or someone who knows LS1s look at it and listen to it in person before you do anything else.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 07-23-2012 11:25 PM

bring it back to Don! Moron!!! CHANGE THE OIL! sounds like a rocker. but its a shitty video so who knows. bring it back but i wouldnt recommend driving it!

DemonWithin99 07-24-2012 03:04 AM

Problem is if it's not a rocker (which it really sounds like bottom end) then it's a waste of the tip without a backup plan, rebuilding this motor is likely out of the question as it is a 98'..

941LE 07-24-2012 01:16 PM

I'll give him a grand for the car.

DemonWithin99 07-24-2012 03:00 PM

cars gonna sit (again) we'll find him a beater for now. see what happens come next spring.

well he's heard people tell him that since his clutch 1st went, nevermind how many times it was said after the motor went. I'm sure he'd rather see it as a lawn ornament than sell it cheap to someone. (other than me which isn't out of the question come next year)

941LE 07-24-2012 07:05 PM

then ill buy it from you for a grand?

DemonWithin99 07-24-2012 08:00 PM

thanks for you're lack of input...

941LE 07-24-2012 08:36 PM

Anytime. The options have been laid out for ya. Bring it back to don or have it be a yard decoration. Offer still stands.

DemonWithin99 07-25-2012 12:27 AM

offer's invalid. I'd pay him less and have it running in a month or two but then I'd sell it. he'd rather it sit, as we can understand this is making him a bit depressed. I'll never give up on the kid or the bird, it deserves a good healthy motor, and we'll find one.

he's just never had much luck with any f-body he's had. Just happens. I'll hold off with any further ideas till next spring. thanks though.

mjs1012 07-25-2012 05:44 PM

what if you threw a 5.3 in for a little while. theyre cheap, easy to find, and really dont make that much less power than an ls1.

DemonWithin99 07-26-2012 12:18 AM

it's worth the look but he's finally realized he needs a more family friendly vehicle. I may end up buying it from him from him for now, let him find a replacement for now. I can afford to keep it. have that LQ9 and another LQ4 that need a rebuild within reach, but I can only do so much right now.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 07-28-2012 01:05 AM

LQ4 and heads!!!! there cheaper and will make the same power.

DemonWithin99 07-28-2012 07:04 AM

got a few finds, I'm not putting up any $ for now this time it's on him.
I'll find something again for it. kids eyes are bigger than his paycheck (aren't we all though)
