Tranny slip and leak....

Soo I was driving home last night on at around 55 in 4th gear the transmission started slipping pretty bad. I noticed its fine in all other gears as far as shifting, downshifting and during lockup. This only happens in 4th gear. Scared shitless, I turned the car off when I got home, let it cool down, took it out for a spin and same thing happened.

Today I let the car run and noticed the smell of tranny fluid and sure enough it was dripping out of a braided line with a ghetto hose clamp around it. Now I'm stuck with no 4th gear and I'm afraid to drive the car.

I'm thinking since the slip is already occurring, the damage has been done. I know fixing the leak wont fix the slip and I just can't afford to rebuild the transmission. What are my options and am I right in my assumptions? I'm sick of dealing with this shitbox LT1.

Well check your fluid level might get away with filling it if it is low but yes damage is done and it's a matter of time now.

If its low try a bottle of Lucus tranny treatment, it may be on its way out but that will by you some time unless its too late.

Well since the auto is busted I'm throwing up the idea of getting it rebuilt and adding a converter and tranny cooler.

I also plan on redoing the motor and adding heads/cam. Or just adding longtubes and calling it done. In either condition where would be a good place to get the tranny rebuilt?

ILuvPizzaTimes10 07-18-2013 03:53 PM

FLT sends you a built one and you send them back yours for the next guy. any place local... forget it.

They provide a converter too right? That would be a good deal

Z28 07-18-2013 04:37 PM

Never mind. Will definitely consider them tho

BigMac76 07-19-2013 01:14 PM

Talk to Don about the converter, pretty sure he has some still floating around the shop. And yeah, send it out and have it done. Not saying that there aren't any good trans shops around the area, just not any really good ones lol.

Might go 6speed/LSx with it tbh. The price to build the auto and get a converter would be close to a 6speed swap

If you want the trans rebuilt right give them a Call. Not sure why everyone says no one local is good..?

Not a single l460e is talked about on his page, just th400s and powerglides....

84ta406 07-20-2013 12:51 PM

More popular, who really races with a 4l60? lol

he did my 700r4 back in the day and Ive seen pretty much any kind of trans come out of there. Call em before you jump to conclusions.

So this guy is parting out a 94 Z28, hes an honest sellet ive bought a bunch of things off him before. Thinking about putting this trans in and rebuilding mine. Thoughts?

84ta406 10-10-2013 01:09 PM

Do it up! Rebuilds really arent that hard. Hardest part IMO is getting the springs behind the clutches to compress so you can get the snap ring out.

I'd like to do a nice rebuild on mine as well to handle more power. Throw a T56 in during the rebuild to see how it is.

Fuck that! I'm done with automatics!

KLAB 02-19-2014 02:05 AM

Hahaha its not bad. You have my number just give me a call if you get stuck.

84ta406 02-19-2014 02:12 AM

3 speed or nothing! haha

Z28 02-19-2014 03:25 AM

So it looks like if the weather holds up ill be pulling the junker trans out. I need to make new lines and retrofit my cooler. Still unsure of what lines to use, probably just going to use stuff from NAPA. I just need to prep the newer transmission to go in after (shift kit, disassembly). I also want to setup a trans temp and pressure gauge so i dont blow this one too lol. Any knowledge on how ti do this?

84ta406 02-19-2014 04:08 AM

Id just use some new hard lines from the parts stores. Or you can do braided lines and some AN fittings. To do the gauges you can mount them inline with fittings for the senders. No need for a pressure gauge really, if it spikes or loses pressure the damage is already done IMO.

racecars only

Why do you need new lines? Yeah you should do a trans temp gage rather than a trans pressure gage.

I left the stock lines on my car to the radiator then popped a pressure and temperature rated hose from rad exit to cooler then plugged the return line hose into the cooler.
powpow :klab:

Street car :)

I went from the trans straight to the cooler and back, but my cooler is rather large..

IIRC kevin, he said his were leaking or something.

Z28 02-19-2014 11:44 AM

The dingleberry who threw the braided lines in for the trans used hose clamps to tighten the connections. For the cooler ill just use the provided hardware with it, im using the B&M 70264.

The only reason I hit the cooler first is to heat it up and regulate the temp for the cold months.

I guess street car but damn I couldn't do a 3 speed in mine. If it was a once in a while cruise/strip car, yeah I'd rock that. I have a few TH350s and TH400s kicking around.
