Ive crossed over to the dark side.....

Welp, like the title says....I recently purchased a 1989 hatchback foxbody mustang. The car itself is a roller, full cage, harnesses, shortened ford 9 inch, ladder bars, coilovers in the rear, disc brakes all around, mini-tubbed, 5 lug conversion, drag wheels (not sure on the brand) skinnies up front. Car is solid, not the cleanest, but thats not what im after. My plans for the car are a 460 swap, th400 trans, maybe a tremec 5 speed, not sure yet. Sticking with a carb.

Let the hating begin!!!!

Haha Im not gonna argue with that! But hey, its still an "f-body" (fox body) lol

It doesnt take much to get 450 hp and 500+tq out of a 460, a good cam, headers, d3ve heads with some port work, intake, carb, and bam. AND you can run them at 5500 rpm safely all day long.

KLAB 10-09-2013 02:31 AM

you should put an lt1 in it

Best.....idea......ever!!!!! Seriously though, Id be perfectly happy with never having to work on an lt1 car ever again. Dont get me wrong, I liked my LT1, it put down some decent power, and put many stangs to shame (idk how stock mustang owners even have fun in their cars honestly...theyre so slow...). Also it was running strong with 179k on it, and its probably still running now. I just couldn't justify dumping money into it to pray and hope for 380whp.... I also couldnt justify spending the amount of money it would take for an LS swap. The swap gets 10x harder just because it was a 93 too. LT1's are great bolt on cars and thats it, IMO, unless you have oodles of money to get into the 450whp range.

Crud. This site is dying a little more every day.

My84Z 10-09-2013 02:52 AM

Do yourself a favor and put a cam only stock 5.3 with some rod bolts in it and a turbo. Will be faster for cheaper.

+1 . I could never do top end stuff to my car. It's too old, especially compared to the LS aftermarket.

KLAB 10-09-2013 03:33 AM

460 sounds like a fun build tho. I've never really looked into how much parts are for those. I would think a gt40 302 would be a cheaper route.

SLP IROC-Z 10-09-2013 03:34 AM

foxbodys are cool but why a 460?

84ta406 10-09-2013 04:58 AM

I like Johns idea or just do a bbc. Cheaper and easier to build. 460s are trash imo

I dont mind mustangs up until after the fox body's. Your not crossing over to the dark side until you buy a honda with a vtec claim its the fastest car in town and throw a fart can on it and make too much noise driving up and down main street for attention ;)

ZFreie 10-09-2013 12:05 PM

I was just giving you crap, I like anything fast. lol

I also vote 5.3 and turbo for sure

KB93z28 10-09-2013 05:06 PM

Turbo 5.3 would definitely be pretty cool, hell there's a lot of cool swaps I could go with. But I want to keep this old school and simple. A nice carbed 460 is exactly what I want. I've been wanting to do this ever since I took my buddies 95 f250 for a ride. It has 9 inches of lift with heavy ass 37 inch military tires with a stock 460 in it. The truck actually moved out of its own way pretty damn good without much effort. It got me thinking about what a 460 with some motor work would be like in a fox body, and IF intend to find out! I think it should be a pretty fun car, in the end, my ultimate goal is to build a car that will put a smile on my face every time I lay Into it.

ZFreie 10-09-2013 05:14 PM

lt1 makes me smile every time I lay into it from a stop lol

ls6monte 10-09-2013 10:31 PM

My friend just finished a fox body 5.3 turbo build. Don did some work on it and it made 550+ rwhp. He already sold it. lol

Any drivetrain you have planned for that car won't be cheap

I disagree, 460 swap kit is about $800, headers, mounts, oil pan, oil pickup, I've found 460 tranny combos for $500 in a 5 minute search. all I need after that is a custom driveshaft, slim radiator and electric fans. a 460 fox body swap is literally one of the most basic, straight forward, and easiest swaps out there. I've done my research and have talked to a very well respected person in the fox body world who says they're cheap, easy swaps to make great power with.

Me too especially when I'm going about 25 and I hit it hard and the car kicks sideways wtf.

bottledbird68 10-10-2013 12:49 AM

There's a problem with the 460 though. It's heavy. Yeah you'll make the power cheap but it screws up the weight and it's distribution in the car. That's the main reason none of the serious race cars run them. You'd honestly be almost the same money for the turbo 5.3 swap, or, if you want to stay carb, l92 head 6.0 with a cam. 550 horse proven in numerous magazines. Less weight from the right place too.
Or do a stroked small block ford if you want to stay all ford.
Not trying to steer you away from the 460 out of brand bias, just been around long enough and seen enough to know that unless you need the low down torque in a truck stay away from the 460.
