LQ4 lifter carnage. What next?

(2000 Silverado LQ4, 136k miles, Auto. Bought with lifter knock)

Well the lifter knock mystery is solved. #2 cyl intake valve, so the second lifter in.
Just got it tore apart today. I had to use vice grips and a pry bar to get this sucker out. I scored the block a little but I'm hoping I can hone it out.

The cam is a little scored as well so a new one is in order.

The lifter bore isn't scored that bad. The cam is more beat up. It's worse at the peak of the lobe. I don't want to chew up another lifter and end up doing this again in 6 months. I got the truck like this and it looks like the guy who fixed it last didn't use the right lifter and only replaced one. The oiling hole is different, and not in the same spot. The body is different. Did this spin? or did the roller bearing go? I don't see any casting numbers on it. cheap POS?

I still have the stock cam out of my 2000 Camaro, the firing order is the same and it "should" work, but I fear it'll lose low end and gain top end. I could get a TSP low lift 218 cam for it. Or is there something else that would work just as good for a SLIGHT bump for the cam. No MS4, no Torquer cam... just a very mild upgrade. Still completely stock otherwise. I'm pretty open minded on this. I think the TSP 218 cam was like .588 lift on a 114.

I have a 10295 Melling oil pump I'm going to replace with it. I'm pretty scared about where the crumbs ended up. I HOPE and pray they ended up on the bottom of the oil pan and the pickup screen did its job. I'm going to drop the oil pan and clean it out. I don't want to chew up a brand new oil pump.

With all the lifters out I "should" be able to blow the lifter valley and cam valley with a blow gun and rinse it with some oil and it "should" wash any remaining crumbs down to the oil pan right? and then I can pull the pan and clean everything out.

Anyway.. Here's the pics.

Pretty sure the LS1 cam is the same specs as the early LQ4s.

Scroll to post 4. http://www.performancetrucks.net/for...-specs-373616/

It shows that they're a touch off. Not exact same. The firing order is the same and I'm pretty sure the dimensions should be the same.

Stock stuff looks like:
99-00 LQ4 191/190 .457/.466 114
99-00 LS1 F-car 198/209 .500/.500 119.5

So it may work.. they both have EGR encorporated into the cam profile. I wouldn't mind the 205/205 .525 .525 114 or so. Thunder racing used to have a nice variety of "old man cams."

LQ4
99-00 12560967 191/190 .457/.466 114
01-04 12561721 196/207 .467/.479 116
01-04 LQ4 cam is same as Camaro, Corvette LS1 and LQ9 cam I saw this that's what I remember as the early ones being the same

honing it means those filing will be in the oil passages after honing is done they will not be able to get blown out. i say if your looking on the cheap. just stick another lifter in there. MAYBE rat tail the high off the scratch. and run it with a new cam.

My84Z 03-28-2015 03:39 AM

Just get another cheap 6.0 toss it in and be done.

I would say get some new lifter cups also, just for safe measure.

^ The plastic lifter retainers?

What keeps the lifters from spinning?

I have all the old lifters out and I sprayed everything down with some penetrating oil to help keep the rust at bay. But the lifter bore really doesn't need much. It's just scratched from me pulling the lifter out. I wonder, in hind sight, if I just took the cam out and just pushed the lifter down and let it fall down into the pan. I'm thinking I can flush the crumbs out with the other lifters being out. If I use a ball hone, just down and back out should do it. The oil pan has to come off anyway.

Yes the lifter retainer cups. Since you have them out its not a bad idea in my honest opinion.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 03-28-2015 05:04 PM

i wouldnt use a hone. its alot more material then you think. most of it should be pressure washed out.
