Sometimes stuff gets misinterpreted along the way. There have been problems caused by two union officers not related to this charity, see here:

Maybe this caused confusion and rumors to start flying. For any specific charity, I really have no idea.
edit: the article is referring to problems before the Sandy Hook tragedy though.
