Default Will this work?

Does anyone have any knowlege about gm's newer trucks? My 1999 GMC sierra 1500 4.8 v8 needs a new transfer case, and I plan on running this truck into the ground, so instead of throwing another POS electronic shift "on the fly" bullcrap T-case in it, I'd much rather throw a manual one in it. I've had nothing but problems with these electronic t-cases. What i'm wondering is if I cut a hole through my floor, will a manual t-case bolt right up in place of the electronic one?

ummmm...ok. What problems have you had? Also your computer is going to have fits if you take it out. Don't really know of any chronic transfer case issues with any of them. I guess you could do it but I'd try and figure out what is wrong with your truck.

The problems I've had include service 4wd lights, t-case failing to shift out of 4wd, t-case failing to shift into 4wd, and my truck makes HORRID noises while in 4wd. But from what your saying, it would be a pita to switch to a manual t-case?

I got a manual silverado and it isnt hard to do cuz the guy down the road ditched his electronic for a manual transer case.
took him a few hours.
finding trhe location for the hole is easy.
there is a pattern already in the sheetmetal for your cuts.
that what he told me at least.

what was the code #? had the same problem in my 2000 2500 and 2004 avalanche and both times it was the encoder in the motor. it would flash service 4x4 then go away. when u 1st start the truck it would be in 4x4 low or something except 2wd. 1 day my wife the avalanche and the transfer put it self in nutral and started to roll away

Hmmm too bad they didnt Keep rolling away ehh buddy????

and yeah man all that seems like the encoder motor. common and not too expensive. the internals them self of the cases are pretty similar. and very strong. so you wont gain strength one over the other. just get rid of that Shitty encoder. there is a kit floating around. it uses its own encoder and a cable/lever setup to shift the t case manually. No i dont remember were i saw it. but its out there.

No code, hooked up a scan tool, and there wasnt a code about the t-case. The service 4wd light will come on, and stay on, it wont flash or anything. The only way it goes away is if i turn the iginition off, then back on. And an encoder motor will help the no-shift issue, but it wont help the fact that the t-case makes disgusting noises lol the t-case is FUBAR

see heres were you could be wrong. If the encoder is wrong telling the motor its engaged stop turning and its not fully engaged THEN you will have some Noises for sure!!

Ahh, I see, but my t-case makes noises even when not in 4wd, I thought it was a wheel bearing at first becuase it was intermittent, but its not, and its ALOT worse when in 4wd. How could I tell that its just the encoder? one of the main reasons I would like to switch to a manual t-case is because of the reliability.

ive taken the motor/encoder assembly off. left it plugged in and manually put the t case in 2wd. made sure it was fully engaged and drove the truck. if the noises go away t case is fine and you need a motor. if the noises are still there get both.

going manual im not entirely sure if it will effect the ECU. i have yet to see transfer case codes come up on an engine scan. had to have a better scanner to read the 4WD "computer" codes.
