No posi????
isn't my car supposed to have a posi rearend? i just took the car for a little spin around the block and decided to just nail it from a rolling start and it layed down a one legger! think i just need a fluid change or could it be something else???

Those rearf ends are finicky. Try rolling in reverse then trying it again. And then also try spinning em turning right. And then do again going left. It can determin if you have a bad worm gear in the carrier and wich one.

2000 would have a Torsen right? A Torsen posi is a lot more complex than the Auburn unit in the older 4th gens (up to 98 or 99, can't remember which). A fluid change most likely wouldn't fix anything. But if you do change it at least you can look at the magnet on the diff cover and see if there's a lot of metal on it.

any easy way to change the fluid? i've never done a rear fluid change.

Unless you have an aftermarket cover with a drain plug you have to take the cover off. Just put a drain pan under there, remove the bolts and let it rip. Check the magnet on the diff cover for any large pieces of metal (it should be just a small amount of metal shavings) and clean it off, and clean off any old gasket stuck to either surface.
To refill it you need 2 quarts of 80W90 gear oil (it takes about 1.7), a new gasket and some RTV for the gasket. No limited slip additive needed for yours. Put the RTV on one side of the gasket and stick it in place, then put it back together. Tighten the bolts in a star pattern like wheel lugnuts. Then remove the filler plug on the side (it should come off by sticking a 3/8 ratchet head in there and turning, unless yours is different). You need to fill the diff until the fluid is at the top of the fill hole and starts to dribble out. It may be helpful to use a turkey baster and a little length of rubber hose to fit over the tip of the baster, there isn't much room to work under there. And wear some rubber gloves, not good work gloves, gear oil stinks like hell. I think that's pretty much it. |

nope no easy way pull the cover spray it all down with parts cleaner, inspect every thing and then put cover back on with new bead of rtv. refill at plug on the right side of the housing near the pinion.

thanks guys, i figured it would be a messy job, i've owned the car for 3 years now and this is the only fluid i haven't changed yet.

id be hard pressed to think its the fluid causing your issue. its not a clutched posi unit like the old days. and you also dont need to add any friction modifier either. it will be good maintenance BUT if something iS wrong with your posi it will mechanical and fluid alone wont fix it. Good Luck!!! let us know how it turns out. and look around for any metal fillings bigger then a pensil tip if you find any that means your "posi" might be broken IF your still having issues with it?
