Tearing down a GEN I SBC
Alright so you've got a old engine and you want to tear it down? Heres the simple way to do it.
1. Remove all accessories, alt. power steering, water pump, headers. 2. Loosen Distributor (1 bolt) and remove. 3. Remove any kind of carburetor (usually 4 nuts/posts) 4. Unbolt the manifold (12 bolts, 6 on each side) 5. Remove manifold and set aside 6. Take off valve covers (4 wings/nuts on each side) |

7. Loosen rocker arms and pull out pushrods (8 on each side)
8. Remove lifters **note** Lifters in picture are roller lifters. 9. Undo head bolts, they will be very tough to undo. Theres 8 lower ones and 9 upper bolts on each side. Undo the lower ones 1st and keep in order and then undo the upper ones keeping them in order as well. 10. Next take off the harmonic balancer. Use a balancer puller and not a mallet or anything as bearings can be damaged. 11. Remove the 10 bolts for the timing cover and set aside. 12. Remove timing chain/gears. There should only be a timing chain since gears are only available aftermarket. 13. Gently slide the cam out. This may be very time consuming as you want to do it slowly and carefully so you dont damage the cam bearings. |
