Oil pan thickness
For my turbo install, I need to tap the oil pan for a return gravity feed. I was talking with the dude at Fastenal about Threadserts. If I can give him the thickness of the pan, he can hook me up with a threaded insert that should hold (hey no welding or taking the oil pan off).
Anyone know the thickness of the oil pan? thx |

I would never thread into a oil pan. Theyre really not that thick. I would just pull the pan and put a bulkhead fitting or.. you can put a big dab of grease on the pan and tap the hole, the grease should get the shavings and just flush the oil out after?

I think the one he has is cast and i am not a fan of taping them due to they dont have a very tough casting

hes not tapping the pan guys. read the post carefully, hes using an expanding insert to creat a good threaded hole without tapping or welding. BUT what hes trying to do while its a good idea it will leak. they arent liquid-tight Jay. Unless fasenal has something new i havent seen yet. just pull the pan and take it to a shop if your that worried. no offense but all this time wonder what to do you would have already had the pan off and back on by now!!!!

So would you guys suggest getting an AN fitting welded on the pan?
I was thinking of drilling and tapping with the pan off the car and using something like this with a gasket http://www.fastwayracer.com/product_...products_id=70 |

Rockstar, in the PM convo you said to use a resistor to turn off the level light from the sensor. How/where does this resistor get installed? I am leaning towards this. I have the oil pressure gauge to tell me how the oil is doing, so the level sensor is redundant. BTW, tons of people just tap the pan and be done with it. Since I race the car and put it under heavy abuse, I want something stronger. |

stop shooting down my good ideas asshat! JBWeld probably won't be enough to keep it from leaking? hahaha. I wish I had that kind of time bro. Some of us don't have madd skillz like you. |
