6 days until the Camaro Nationals.

This year the Z is in the Legends Class which is about as squirrely as you can get for points chasing trailer queens. It's a 5,000 point class and they put in on a lift.

The 1969 former owner is coming from California, the 1974 former owner is coming from South Carolina and the 1976 former owner is coming from Florida. It should be real interesting.

Everything is pretty much set on the car except for one spot where there is a gap between the lower windshield trim (near the driver's side) and the outer cowl panel. The clip probably came loose when it was being buffed out.

after that....I'm not sure what else might be incorrect or how the car will do, but hopefully it will do OK.

It would be nice, but doubtful. The judges in the legends class are extremely knowledgeable on 1st gen and 2nd Camaros. It's little details like the wrong headmarkings on certain bolts, the wrong finish on a certain parts, reproduction parts, etc... that make you lose points.

It's not unusual for a 1st year legends car to score around 85%. If I hit 90% I'll be happy, and if I hit 95% I'll be ecstatic.

The clip will be fixed on Monday. lol.

The trip to Maryland didn't go smoothly and my trailer brakes need some major work.

Anyway, the car scored 94.6% and I'm happy with the score. I didn't get the detailed info yet on the deductions but I should have them in about a week or so.

I'm not 100% sure why, but it was nerve-wracking for me to watch the car being judged this year.

The 1969 former owner came from California.
The 1974 former owner came from South Carolina.
The 1976 former owner came from Florida.

They were awesome guys to hang out with and all of them want the car back.

I'm not sure if it's wiring or the brakes themselves. It was working when we left but not long after the truck brakes were taking the entire load while braking. At one point I was braking while coming around a corner and it felt like the back end of the truck lifted off the ground.

A few cars had problems with starting and some had problems with stalling out but the green Z ran great.

I had a good time anyway! The former owners were very cool and swapped a lot of stories about when they actually DROVE the car everywhere.

Alfred has the most miles. He drove it from Missouri to Illinois to California, where he used it as a daily driver for about 5 years, and then to Texas.

Nice catch! His car is a rallye green 69 Z/28 almost the same as mine except he has a cowl induction hood (which came out 1/2 way through 1969) and he does not have an endura bumper.

Also, he has the only X11 code 1st gen Z/28 as all others were X77 or X33.

Alfred, the 1969 owner, sent me a video that he took with his camera. It's taking the Z off the lift at the 2014 Camaro Nationals.

Jeez....it's been a while since I posted details on the 69 Z.

Between fixing up the money pit (house), work, family life, and a 1st gen disagreement, I got off track with fixing up the Z and didn't do anything on it for a year.

Jeff68 has been getting me back on track and focused. The devil is in the details. He has been helping me research what is correct and tracking down original hardware.

For the Z, after some simple operations stuff, I need 49 more points to make Legends gold. Not many cars have made it that far.

I was feeling burnt out, but, with Jeff's help....I will hit gold level. The plan is to hit gold and then start driving the car a lot more.

For hardware, the list is:

Parts Needed

1. Grille stiffener screws: I have the wrong ones (should be black?)

2. Front spoiler retaining screws: I have the wrong ones.

3. Front spoiler washers for outer braces: I don’t have any.

4. Header emblem: I have a reproduction on there. Need a great condition NOS one. Even in the 1969 pictures, the emblem is missing and grille has been repainted black.

5. Engine Lift bracket bolts: I have the wrong ones.

6. PVC, Hoses & Clamps: I need just one, clamp should have square ends with the correct logo

7. Front Shock: 3192477, dated correctly for a 2nd week Jan 69 car. Late 68 would be good.

8. Sway Bar & Links: link bolt should be fine thread. Mine is not correct.

9. Fuel Lines: #5,7. 8 wrong clips

10. Brake Lines: green clip is missing on cross member, #1 clip s/b blue # 4, 5, 6, 7

11. Emergency Brake Hardware: mouse ears incorrect

12. Fuel Tank: ground screw wrong

13. Weatherstrip: slight wear to rubber on on retainer, pinch weld on driver missing metal tab

14. Battery & Hold Down: wrong hold down

15. Battery Cables: ground wire to therm housing missing star washer

Yep. Since I'm the 9th owner, a lot of changes were made over the years.

For example, in 1969, someone:

• took off the front spoiler
• removed the grille and painted it black
• did not put the Z/28 grille emblem back on

45 years later, I then:

• picked up the wrong spoiler hardware
• bought an grille emblem on EBay that I thought was original but is a reproduction
• got a bunch of deductions

A lot of the stuff is bolts and misc hardware. I've got most of it coming in.

Some of these things, like the grille emblem are a pain in the ass.

The Z/28 grille emblem is part # 3958642.

1969 assembly line correct, the “28” is silver. There is no part number on the actual emblem.

"Over the counter" emblems sold in the early 70's had the correct silver "28". In the mid 70's and later GM sold over the counter ones that have a white "28".

I bought a silver "28" emblem on EBay in the original gm box. I'm not sure why it's not correct, but it was judged as "repro".

maybe because NOS is a part over the count made after the production of the actual car. so it was not installed at the plant at time of manufacture. But "aftermarket"? either way stupid thing to lose a point over. its still a GM piece.

There are some real odd-ball things in judging, but I can see why they want it "assembly-line correct" vs. "over the counter". At least I can understand the specifics of why they want it that way. Except for this grille emblem. I spent a lot of time looking at it and so far the only difference I can find vs. another one that has the original box is a shade of color difference in the Z.

There is a very knowledgeable guy on Camaros and Corvette’s (he is also a NCRS judge) and he has an unrestored 69 Z/28. He was also a GM engineer in the 60's. His name is John Hinckley and he goes by the user name JohnZ.

He has a term he likes. It’s “New Old Replacement Stock”, NORS.
