Oil filter question

I'd like to run a taller oil filter on my car if possible. I'm pretty sure I've read that there is one intended for trucks and such that would work. Does anyone know what application I could use to find this filter (I.E. 97 Sierra half ton 5.7 or whatever)? I'd like to use a Purolator Pureone. I've looked at the oil filters available for my exact application, they are all pretty short, the only exception is the K&N which is a little taller but is like $13.

My84Z 08-02-2010 11:49 PM

I know they do that with the ls1 didn't know about the lt1.

Yup, I did some digging over at LS1Tech and I got the skinny. You can look up a '97 C1500 with the 5.7 and get the right part number. Here are some for reference:

Purolator Pureone PL34631
Purolator L34631
K&N HP-3002
Mobil 1 M1-302
Delco PF1218
Bosch 3510
STP S5

I went over to Advance and took some measurements. Most of the F Body filters are about 3 1/8" high, with the exception of the K&N, which is about 4 3/4", 1/2" of which is the nut for wrench removal. The truck filters vary in size, 5 1/8" for the Purolator, 5 3/8" for the Mobil 1, 4 1/2" for the AC Delco, and 5 3/4" for the K&N (again including 1/2" for the hex head).

Keep in mind if you have long tube headers you may not have enough clearance to use some of these.

Cause of your remote filter kit lol.

I'm not a fan of K&N oil filters after we played around cutting open filters one day at the garage. The innards of the K&N were very brittle. From our highly unscientific hacking I'm a fram fan lol.

Navy01z 08-03-2010 05:04 AM

Thats all I use in my car are the K&Ns.

*LS1* Queen 08-03-2010 05:22 AM

ive always run mobil 1

Formula413 08-03-2010 07:25 AM

Every actual comparison I've ever seen put Fram at the bottom of the list, without exception.

DemonWithin99 08-03-2010 07:39 AM

I used the tall one for the 1500 on mine before I got the oil temp adapter, the tall ones are a must have for those of us running LT's. (IMO)

after I put the adapter on it dropped the filter down 2" so the shorter filters are easier to get at now, but still don't mind using the taller ones.

Same here but I still use Fram for some reason. I can get the Napa golds from work which are Wix filters though.

ls6monte 08-03-2010 04:25 PM

I have had a couple of friends cars lose their engines due to a fram oil filter. Don't know the specifics but I was told that by a couple of people.

bottledbird68 08-03-2010 09:53 PM

Huh, we cut open 4-5 different brands we had laying around one day cause we were curious. I remember the K&N was brittle as hell inside and crumbled when we touched it and all the rest were either brittle or had a lot less pleating inside than the fram. Didn't do an actual filtration test but it visually looked nicer inside than the rest we had on hand.

kaboom 08-03-2010 09:55 PM

x2 fram sucks
i always use the delco filters (on all the trucks) but i use the k&n on the camaro for the same reason you r considering. ive never had a problem but really only drove 20,000 in 5 years. all in all im happy

Formula413 08-03-2010 10:26 PM

The two specific issues I remember with Fram filters were cardboard end caps inside and less filter media than other brands. There may have been more but that's what I remember.

From the ones that I cut open I can say that without a doubt the fram looked to have a lot more filter media than the rest that we had on hand.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 08-04-2010 10:39 PM

Fram=Fail. ive actually seen them come apart. i will never use them again after seeing that. and i think K&N is a waiste of money unless its coming with a oil change special for cheap.

Formula413 08-05-2010 12:08 AM

Here's a page I found with lots of in depth info on many brands of filters. This info is about ten years old, so some of it may not be accurate anymore.

oil filter

NAPA has a nascar one Black which is a WIC long one that chad fro Golden engines told me to use here is the part #91060
use only AC-DELCO or WIX filters

Grovlet 08-17-2010 02:28 AM

I actually stand by Amsoil Filters:feather:

I cut open a few different ones a while back, and Fram was all Paper and Cardboard.... WIX well that was flimsy and very little filter material from what I remember:goodevil:

When we cut ope the Amsoil Filter it was solid and had two layers of metal mesh filter screens...:smiliehello::hititbag:

I've had no issues using for Amsoil Filters almost 10 years now, but I only drive the car 3,500 miles a year... Although I do beat the snot out of it:panic:

Purolator Pureone's are good too.

After doing the research that's the one that I've been using. Very high efficiency, lots of filter media, and quality parts inside. And at a reasonable price. I'm going to run a Pure One truck filter on my next oil change.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 08-17-2010 09:51 PM

Do you have an oil cooler alex?

No, we've had that conversation like 20 times, don't you ever pay attention? :p

Actually I was thinking about that and it occurred to me that that must be why LT1s use a shorter filter than the truck/van 5.7s. But I looked at mine and I have plenty of room, it won't be anywhere near being the lowest point on the engine, if it was sticking out past the pan I wouldn't do it. If anything the increased oil capacity should help slightly with oil temps.

As an interesting side note, 4WD pickups use an entirely different filter, it even has different threads.

84ta406 08-18-2010 12:38 AM

Get a remote mount kit and run it under the front bumper, acts as a cooler and extra capacity lol.

Batman 08-18-2010 01:02 AM

Alex, do you have an oil cooler? :p

Yes, yes I do, it is located directly up your ass!!! :moon:

ILuvPizzaTimes10 08-19-2010 10:28 AM

Hahah yes alex you can use a truck filter. That's my setup. It won't help at all with cooling though. And its eveb debateable if you'll get bettter filtering. Fyi The 4wd truck have an angle bracket on them to clear the front diff.
