bump stops

i have some new ones since my stockers are gone. the new ones came with this aluminium spacer thas about 1.5-2 inches thick. do I need these spacers?thanks

My84Z 03-19-2011 09:10 PM

Who uses bump stops? Lol i cut mine off when i put my 17x11's on but from what i remember no u do not use the spacers

black heartbeat 03-19-2011 09:48 PM

you don't need spacers but if you were to replace them, rather than use stock rubber that rots away I'd use some of the poly replacement stops I think spohn makes one

wils 03-19-2011 11:36 PM

i have poly ones and I dont think i will use the spacers thanks

ILuvPizzaTimes10 03-20-2011 01:43 AM

if you have 17 inch or bigger wheels in 275 or wider tread you should run them with the spacers. this way the tires wont hit the inside slope of the wheel wells.

wils 03-20-2011 01:11 PM

hmm yes i do have 274/40/17

My84Z 03-20-2011 04:29 PM

Throw them away lol

No rub on my 275/40-R17's :gayfight:

Formula413 03-22-2011 02:38 AM

It's 275/40-17, and it's the stock tire size on SS's and WS6's, so why would it cause a rubbing issue?

black heartbeat 03-22-2011 02:50 AM

^^ I agree, I have them on the TA (ws6) and didn't have spacers on it, never had a rubbing issue.

941LE 03-22-2011 02:20 PM

my 17x11s didnt rub with stock springs. only with the lowering springs and it wasnt on the inside where they rubbed. Fenders had to be rolled.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 03-22-2011 06:49 PM

funny how the WS6 cars came factory with a taller bump stop FOR that reason... gues im wrong.... You Need The Stops unless you feel like hitting your wheel wells with the inside edge of the tire.

Do you mean the spacers that extend the bumpstops down longer???? Making the rear axle be stopped/bottomed out earlier than without? Because that makes sense. I guess that applies for launches or hitting bumps when your suspension is squatted in the back the inside top of the tire would probably rub. I thought you meant something like the tire hits the bumpstop just driving around I'm like naw mine don't rub.

Waddyaknow! I just compared the v6 and the ws6, the ws6 bump stops have a little plastic spacer on them.

Formula413 03-23-2011 09:23 PM

Hmmm...I've been running WS6 wheels and 275 tires for a few years now and no rubbing. I know a 275 Nitto DR is a little bit narrower than most 275s, but it doesn't seem like it's even close to rubbing anywhere.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 03-24-2011 02:37 AM

you wrong alex. just deal. haha they rub its A FACT.

Formula413 03-24-2011 02:38 AM

My DRs are sitting in the basement right now, you want pictures?

ILuvPizzaTimes10 03-24-2011 02:48 AM

nitto is like running a 265 if not even a bit skinnier. a true goodyear or bfgood 275 or bigger hits the inside of the wheel well Just slightly over big bottom out bumps. since you drive your car like grampa you wouldnt have really bottomed it out enough to scuff the tire. but i bet you take a good look at your under coating and its rubbed.

Thanks for playing.

This is just ignorance on your part, because you don't ride with me so you aren't aware that the car sees WOT and cornering to the limits of tire adhesion every time I drive it. It's one thing to be convinced that you know everything when it comes to hypotheticals, but another altogether to argue against actual facts.

Formula413 03-24-2011 03:18 AM

Pics of inside of tire, run (and run HARD) on car with stock Formula bumpstops for two years

http://s158.photobucket.com/albums/t95/atd413/Tire/

ILuvPizzaTimes10 03-24-2011 01:38 PM

wow you need to take a joke. panties need some unwinding??? and its the top of the tire that hits the wheel well NOT the inside.

Formula413 03-24-2011 02:05 PM

And that doesn't hit either, so long story short you are not always right.

Formula413 03-24-2011 02:21 PM

And FYI 275/40-17 tires are not taller than 245/50-16 tires, just wider, so any rubbing would be on the sides and not the top.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 03-24-2011 06:58 PM

That would be true if the wheel well was not curved wich it in fact is. So a wider tire will hit the curve of the wheel well on top Not the side. I still don't know why your debating a fact. I have skyjacker spreings in my car for christ sake and they rub slightly. I'm not saying its going to cause serious damage. But if you have bump stop spacers why would you not use them?? All ws6s came with spacers and 98 up ss' did as well. Why? You need them. End of story unless you feel like hitting your wheel well with a tire. Will it Fuck your car up. Probably not. But if you can stop it wouldn't you??

My84Z 03-24-2011 07:58 PM

you 2 stop disagreeing or we will lock the thread!!!!

btw Pizza is right gasp I can't believe I just said that. However I have no bumpstops and I can count my tire rubbing maybe once in years.

Formula413 03-24-2011 08:26 PM

I'm sure GM used different bump stops for a reason, but the fact is that my tires do not rub. Maybe they would if it was a different brand of 275 tire, but these do not.

My84Z 03-24-2011 08:28 PM

You wouldn't notice if they did rub unless it was really bad

Formula413 03-24-2011 08:31 PM

I've been in a car with tires that rub, there is definitely no mistaking it. I will check my wheel wells when I put the DRs back on, but I guarantee there is nothing up there but road grime and VHT.

My84Z 03-24-2011 08:45 PM

A rear tire is only gonna rub on a hard bump or a launch so between the bang of the bump or the tires screeching exhaust etc you won't notice it and unless it happens alot you won't see it much either.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 03-24-2011 11:34 PM

THANK YOU! thyts my point. it may not happen OFTEN or be that Bad But nun the less it does happen!

black heartbeat 03-25-2011 12:03 AM

I've never had tires rub :-P just saying!!!!!!!!!!!!

KLAB 03-25-2011 04:20 PM

Yes, that is what the spacer does.

KLAB 03-26-2011 06:39 PM

interesting interesting. I looked earlier and my undercoating looks like smooth right where the tire would hit. Myth confirmed. But its not bad enough, I'll get some spacers though but my tires are barely scuffed.

Formula413 03-26-2011 09:58 PM

Or just get some Nitto DRs, works for me! LOL Suprising such a small change in width makes a difference but I don't know how else to explain it.

My84Z 03-26-2011 10:08 PM

Ecause nitto dr's are 25.5 inches tall where as a 275 45 is 26"

irockidz28 03-26-2011 10:10 PM

so there you go .5" difference
