MY 396ci LT1 TH400 build inside!

I've been all over the place with work and school, but I want to start to keep track of my winter build:

1994 Z28 convertible, T56 6-speed

This was my first car, I've had it for over 8 years now. It had 117k on it when I bought it, and it's at 160k now. I've been drag racing since I was 8 years old, and I've decided over the past year that this is the type of racing that I want to focus on in the future. I hope to see mid 10s at 130 MPH once we get it dialed in, powershifting 2nd gear in the air!

So here's where we are now:

Last year I did:
-Wolfe 6-point roll cage welded in
-Corbeau LG1 seats
-Impact 6-point harnesses
-Converted the interior from tan to black with new carpet
-New convertible top

Parts ordered/here to be installed at X-mas:
-Quick Performance 9" rear, 35 spline Moser axles with 4.56 gears and a spool
-UMI Chrome Moly Adj. Torque Arm
-UMI Double Adj. Rod-ended Panhard Bar
-UMI Double Adj. Rod-ended Lower Control Arms and relocation brackets
-UMI convertible subframe connectors
-Solid Wolfe drag race swaybar welded on
-Denny's Nitrous Ready 1000HP 3.5" Driveshaft

Now for everyone's favorite part, the engine:
-Gil Davis built 396ci LT1 stroker, roughly 12.5:1 compression
-Forged crank
-Forged H-beam rods
-Forged Diamond pistons
-Custom Advanced Induction top end

Couple of teaser pics:

LOL, if Pizza's car is any gauge that should get you into the 12.9 bracket (I'm just kidding! sweet ride!)

94Z28rag 12-03-2009 08:30 PM

I think not, lol

941LE 12-03-2009 11:12 PM

looks good. Is that a Moser rear or a QP rear? Looks exactly like my QP 9in housing

ILuvPizzaTimes10 12-03-2009 11:58 PM

Looks Good Man!!!! im right about there just need a better top end and it looks like you went with the best!!?? AI 200cc cnc'd GM castings? or did you go all out and get the TrickFlow 21* heads that just came out? Ohh and are you gunna paint that Quick Performance 9"?

Batman 12-04-2009 12:54 AM

Since there is a HUGE Moser sticker in the pic I am guessing it is a Moser, taht and it says "Moser 9" rear" in his post

ILuvPizzaTimes10 12-04-2009 01:08 AM

No Jack ASS!!!! its a quick performance. with Moser Axles!!! same housing i have. moser doesnt have a rod end torque arm mount only QP does!! Wise Ass

94Z28rag 12-04-2009 01:55 AM

Pizza is right, I mislabeled it. QP rear is far superior to the Moser. I'll edit my post when I get home. The axles are 35 spline Mosers.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 12-04-2009 02:54 AM

Hahaha told yah Bat Wings!!! dont worry i fixed it for yah already!! and i Agree the quick perfomance 9" is incredible!!! i couldnt believe the craftsmanship wen i got mine from Ebay. something like this deserves more credit then an Ebay rear end!!!

ILuvPizzaTimes10 12-04-2009 02:55 AM

ohh and one more thing. Why 35 splines? 31's depending on gear ratios are good for 600+rwt. and they recomend to run the smallest axle that you need to save rotating weight. and let me know how you like the spool. i HATE mine so far.

i DID call that one though......:p

c4boom 12-04-2009 03:23 AM

he would hate a clutched rear more when on the first track day he smokes it

John in RI 12-04-2009 03:35 AM

A 94 Z28 for your first car,.............. Not a bad way to start out !! Looks like a REAL high quality build ! A 396 with T56 and 4.30's ----> Wow !

:D

c4boom 12-04-2009 03:57 AM

he better plan on running a 28" tire or that thing is going to run out of gear on the top end

The guy that's building my 3rd member for the 9" recommended Brydon (Quick Performance) for my rear over Moser. Far superior torque arm mount and better fit, IMO. Plus Brydon is super to work with.

Why 35 spline? This build = no compromises. I don't want them to ever break. Do it once, do it right. Not to mention I'm going to be leaving at 5,000+RPM with a 6-speed.:drivingwheel:

As for the spool, my builder talked me out of the locker for 2 reasons:

-Realistically, this car is going to be a trailered track car before too long. I can deny it all I want, but its the truth.

-Secondly, the locker is inconsistent on the street and on the track. The spool sucks, but it sucks consistently. Plus, its lighter!

I've done my homework ;)

c4boom 12-04-2009 04:06 AM

O i didnt say that you didnt know what you where doing just that you where going to need a tall tire to do it

I know you didn't mean anything by it. Also need the tall tire to absorb the shock from the clutch drop.

Slowhawk 12-04-2009 05:52 PM

Never say never..... ! twisted 2- 35 spline axles in my Firehawk and that only made 430rwhp.

c4boom 12-04-2009 07:04 PM

how the hell did you pull that off

But Moser replaces them for free with 35 or 40 spline :)

9" and suspension parts are in!

We have decided to go with 4.56s and a spool after finalizing the cam selection with AI. Can't wait to get the rest of this together...shooting for summer 2010 to get it to the track.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 12-29-2009 02:07 AM

Awesome!!!! Cant Waittt

94Z28rag 12-29-2009 02:09 AM

Oh ya, compression will be upwards of 12.5:1, but I'm going to:shakin: on the specific number for now.

c4boom 12-29-2009 02:42 AM

with a good tune can you still run 93 in that motor

I doubt that would happen, plenty of limited slip diffs out there running more power then him

Yes. The motor is being built to run 93 octane, we'll see how everything shakes out in the end, though, as I'm open to running a mix if it shows worthwhile gains.

True, but the spool eliminates that "what if."

Batman 12-29-2009 03:53 AM

If it is basically a track car a spool is definitely the way to go, they just blow on the street

Formula413 12-29-2009 04:03 AM

Ok I feel like a tool asking this but what is that part at the bottom of the suspension parts, below the LCAs? I don't recognize it...

Batman 12-29-2009 04:26 AM

looks like a solid rear sway bar

c4boom 12-29-2009 05:23 AM

the clutched rear is ok if the track is in good shape but if one side is slick I have seen them burn out in about 15-20 runs. This is what i have seen not saying that they cant hold up. It all comes down to if you are over powering the clutches all the time more of a issue with drag tires and axle torque not a crank HP issue.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 12-29-2009 05:29 AM

track loks SUCK. the auburn is useless and the true track sez right in the advertisement its not made for 350+rwhp applications. whats left? thats why i went spool. it may Suck ass on the street, but no matter what happens its both tires. and even if you break an axle your getting home. But thats me. i can see 12.5:1 running on pump gas. i have 12.2 and if i get around 200 degrees coolant tempt it starts to ping slightly under a load. hasnt happened sence Dons tune. maybe the tune was the problem But it happened none the less. so wen is this thing gunna be burning some tires?!?!?!

Correct. That's a Wolfe solid rear swaybar that will be welded on soon.

It's allllll in the tune. The head gasket choice will give me the final number but we'll be pushing the limits of pump gas on purpose. This should be a pretty radical setup.

The money tree is only so large and grows only so quickly, but I think we'll have it on the dyno and street-testing come summertime and getting it to the track by fall.

Don't forget that I need at least an 8-pt cage with a convertible at 10.99, so I'll be modifying my 6-pt bar to be legal before we go down the strip.

Batman 12-29-2009 10:15 AM

My run of the mill Eaton has held up fine for 6 years, and I know of another eaton with upgraded clutch packs holding over 550RWTQ on a 421. Alot of it also has to do with the driver and the suspension.

John in RI 12-30-2009 01:14 AM

I'm Green with envy ! My Z just got got a used Slave and a New line /Rear Caliper for Christmas !!!

:D

94Z28rag 12-30-2009 10:58 PM

Just got final specs on the cam today from AI.......

25X/26X on a 106, .6XX lift.

Yeehaw!

ILuvPizzaTimes10 12-31-2009 06:59 AM

Sounds big to be on the street But a fun time nun the less!!! little bigger then mine..... haha

94Z28rag 12-31-2009 08:13 AM

It's definitely cammed for the strip on purpose, but I'll be driving it to and from the track and taking it out on weekends/cruise nights/etc. Should be a serious head turner when I start it up!
