Need TH400

Looking for a 400 to hold up to the build i'm doing now. let me know if you have anything. Thanks

84ta406 02-25-2012 11:07 PM

I think I'm the only one on here really with a built TH400 aside from maybe Slowhawk. Best bet is to find a core and call this guy:

Gregoire Racing Transmissions/Rons Auto. 640 Worcester St. Southbridge Ma.
(978) 764-3542 Ron Gregoire

Camaro9969 02-25-2012 11:17 PM

my uncle has 3 sitting behind his garage but not built. theres someone who will build one to hold 1000 hp for 1240 i just need more than that for a conversion.

84ta406 02-26-2012 12:13 AM

Get a TH400 done and use a JW ultrabell, TH400 Swap x member and a longer Driveshaft. Also I suggest a Hurst Quarterstick.

SLP IROC-Z 02-26-2012 01:16 AM

2004r way better

84ta406 02-26-2012 02:29 AM

Aside from having OD, how is it way better? I'm not looking for a debate just want your opinion

SLP IROC-Z 02-26-2012 04:06 AM

i think doing a 2004r is a way better idea because of the overdrive and the fact that they can be built to handle tremendous power.

84ta406 02-26-2012 04:15 AM

I know a lot of people have been doing 4L80's as of late since some of the TH400 parts transfer over etc. Thats what I was thinking of doing.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 02-26-2012 02:24 PM

To put it in perspective. with proper tuning the 4L80E will handle almost 100hp as it sits stock. Sam is using one as well as don used one in his 6500 pound turbo avalanche. just some food for thought. But if this is Not going to be a driver then get a th400. they are just really sloppy for a street car tranny after they get stalled way up and built. could be me?? and i think the programmable shift points and far superior design of the modern tranny far out weigh the cheap and strong th400.

84ta406 02-26-2012 03:10 PM

4500 stall in mine felt almost stock to me. The biggest thing is to get a good QUALITY converter.

For just drag racing and some street use a TH400 will be fine, but if you plan on highway driving, I would really look into the 4L80.

I'll sell the TH400 in my car, 1400obo

smokinss 02-27-2012 01:35 AM

I've got a built th350 in my ss that came out of my buddies 8sec turbo car and its held up just fine for me.

As far as a converter don't be cheep. I spent more on my converter from fti than I did the trans. Converter cost me 850+

Camaro9969 02-27-2012 12:11 PM

Ya i'll be calling yank for the converter to be specd for my set up, id do a 4l80 but a built one is like 3500 bucks screw that id rather spend the money elsewhere and lose a little highway driving. I have other cars for that.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 02-28-2012 04:27 AM

i think you missed the piont that sams car is running a Stock 4L80E????? just tuned and i Think Stalled?

a half ton avalance doesnt weigh 6500. a 2500hd extended cab short bed 4x4 with a duramax is about 6500.

quik95lt1 02-28-2012 09:59 PM

fyi anything under 1000 hp and a strong th350 is all you need........no need for the weight and power loss......

Ive seen a lot of motors under 1000hp rip up TH350's. I just got done rebuilding one that was behind a 481ci BBC that looked like a grenade went off inside.

Slowhawk 02-29-2012 07:21 PM

The 350 tranny will not last as long as a 400 under decent power. My tranny was over the $3k mark and I still plan on rebuilds every winter.

got a friend of mine that ran a rossler th350 behind a 870rwhp nitrous motor......been in the car for 3 years now no problems.....like i said a "well" built one will.........of course there are alot of other variables in play....weight, launch rpm, driving style, so on a so forth..............not tyring to contradict just stating my experience :D......everybody told me i was nuts beating on a 4l60e in my car at my speed yet they are all sitting there looking as this trans is going on 5 years now behind this motor and ive never had an issue with it......

84ta406 03-01-2012 01:04 AM

Some people get lucky :)

I much prefer a TH400 in anything over 3000lbs and 650-700hp

SLP IROC-Z 03-01-2012 01:15 AM

depends on the application as well, car that sees alot of street miles & abuse vs a car that only makes 1/4 mile passes.

Camaro9969 03-01-2012 06:12 PM

I think i'm just going to say screw it and get a powerglide much better first gear for 60's

Slowhawk 03-01-2012 06:56 PM

Why bother with a 6.0L setup like yours?

Camaro9969 03-01-2012 10:28 PM

What do you mean? If you are saying becasue i wont make enough power id rather buy one tranny than 2. In the next couple years i'll hopefully be around the 1200+hp mark so i need something strong enough. And there are a few glides on tech that are going for the same price as a th400. And hold more HP it all depends on what pops up for sale...........

Slowhawk 03-01-2012 10:33 PM

Your doing a 25.5 or 25.3 cage in the car?

Camaro9969 03-01-2012 11:15 PM

Not this year but eventually i'll do everything i need to i just didnt feel like buying more than one tranny. Like i said it all depends on what pops up for sale. This is my first build so its not going to be a quick process. But i want to get it running by the end of april. And i still want it a street car that 25.5 cage is friggen extreme haha

Camaro9969 03-01-2012 11:31 PM

Im just tryinig to have some fun! Thats what this is all about. I have My RX7 is my real race car

84ta406 03-01-2012 11:53 PM

I would stick with the TH400, I hate glides really. Never been good to drive with.

Slowhawk 03-02-2012 04:32 AM

Everything breaks making good power. I thought my car would be a cheap build and I'll hit $30k easy enough. My last 25.5 build hit $35k for just a rolling chassis before selling it.

I'm thinking it was more fun running a h/c 11.5 second car.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 03-02-2012 05:01 AM

yeah thats why im sticking with Slow. WAYYYY CHEAPER!!! and i can still drive it to work everyday!!!

quik95lt1 03-02-2012 01:44 PM

the glide will run better in a race turbo application but good luck driving it around lol.....for the street the th350/400 will be suited best.....the 3 speed will allow you to run a tighter converter with less gear....youll enjoy driving it much more.....

Camaro9969 03-04-2012 09:26 PM

Jesus 35k on a rolling chassis? I should of just did a little work to mine this will never be worth it haha Its not like you could ever win money in this "sport" unless your running funny cars.

84ta406 03-04-2012 11:52 PM

Thats not true, start running classes and get contingency money. Theres a lot out there.

Slowhawk 03-05-2012 01:31 AM

Ya, get $200 a race when it costs you $500-$1k to get the car there. LOL

There's no money in racing, it's for fun.

Better off buying a car that is done. Think about what your doing now. Pretty much putting a throw away motor into the car, have to put in a drivetrain which the 12 bolt will be a throw away. Then suspension and then a cage. I'm sure 95 LT will agree that this sport gets expensive.

holokosta 03-05-2012 03:23 AM

Shit I thought fuckin tuna fishing was expensive.
