Now that is some horsepower....

the New C-5M doing a max power takeoff at over 500,000 pounds....and only using 1800 feet of runway. Gotta love bigger engines! Eat your heart out fighter pukes, an F-15 can't do that....

Of course there is still the problem of the zoomy little brother to deal with on the hot rod scale....

smokinss 07-20-2010 10:03 AM

impressive, with only that little of runway

DAWG 07-20-2010 10:18 AM

Navy got it beat with a c-130 takeoff from a carrier fully loaded too!
an even shorter takeoff is possible with JATO rockets installed btw.

Sorry Dawg, the 130 was empty for the carrier landing and the new J model can take off in less runway then JATO assisted H's, but it isn't going to do it at the kind of weights the other 2 do. The Navy shortly after realized it was also a retarded idea because there isn't room for many aircraft on the carrier if you want to turn a C-130 around

Also C-130J max takeoff weight is 170,000 pounds and needs 2300 feet of runway to do it
C-17 Max take off weight is 585,000 pounds and it uses 4200 feet of runway to do it
C-5M Max take off weight is 840,000 pounds and it needs 4900 feet of runway to do it

those numbers are based on a good day at an average altitude, so they are really apples and oranges. However compare the new C-5M to say one of our C-5A's that at 840,000 would need about 11,000 feet of runway and the difference becomes pretty clear

No matter how you slice it, I think it is impressive

Nice! As usual Dawg is trying to one upmanship everybody! lol

Batman 07-20-2010 07:25 PM

well since we can stuff a C-130 inside a C-5, I'd say he is SOL

Thats amazing

True there is no direct correlation between horsepower and thrust, but some creative math a good "wag" is 1.5HP=1 pound of thrust at 560MPH, so at 560MPH the C-5M is making roughly the equivalent of 318,000HP. That's a bunch :)

Woza, Impressive!
