Grinding while in gear
So this is new to me. I've herd of grinding while shifting into gear as a result of worn syncros. But I'm getting a humming/grinding noise while I'm already in gear. I havnt singled out any particular gears but I'll just be going along and I can hear this dull grind and I can feel it through the shifter knob. It lasts a couple seconds then goes away if I pull it out and push it back in or if I push it harder into gear. I'm gonna do a transmission flush tomorrow at work. Costs me like 10 bucks. Any ideas?

Either synchro's or the gears in the trans are getting fubared

its the syncros mine did the same thing. the blocker rings are worn. time for a rebuild. or it will start pooping out of gear.

Haven't had the opportunity to rebuild any light vehicle trans, but have seen this on some heavy equipment (tri-axle dump trucks) where the synchro's would start to wear causing it to grind/whine in gear. also noticed that the bearings were getting some wear causing some of the shims to get slapped around a bit and worn down. wasn't 100% sure as to the root of the cause, but replaced it all and never did it again. might as well spend the $10 for the flush and check the fluid for any signs of metallic wear/breakdown.

No idea....but on a first gen with a M20, M21 or M22 before going into reverse, you're supposed to go into first gear first and then reverse.

do yourself a favor. Look on car-part.com for a T-5 tranny out of a 93-02 and swap it. I only did it a couple times. could usually find them for around 300
