I use a pen and paper. It's free.

My taxes are pretty simple, I don't have a lot of deductions I could claim so I use the standard deduction. I file form 1040EZ for the federal and drop it in the mailbox. As for the state, I used to use telefile until they got rid of it. I think last year I filed online at the Mass DOR website, which is also free. I have never used software for anything. I know they have a program now where if you meet certain income guidelines you can use some tax software for free. I tried doing that once but it was complicated so I just did it by mail, and that's what I've been doing since.
