This is a true story......
My 95 Z had a stock exhaust to till the 3" cat back. A cut-out was welded inline and the intermediate pipe continued to the muffler & rectangle Z28 Tips. Shortly after buying the car and getting it inspected the Cat Clogged and had to be gutted out. A couple years later my car needs another sticker so I give it to a buddy. They put my car on the dyno and used it to get stickers for 2 other cars. My car was 3rd and by that time it was to warm and failed. The car sat for awhile and when it was cool it was back on the dyno and it passed. ( WITH hollow Cat.) All other smog system parts were installed on the car. ( That dude has been out of business so I don't mind telling the story ! )
( years later ) When I replaced my rotted Cat-Back last spring and installed the headers and I made sure that it had all It's Smog equipment re-installed 'cause if it don't pass in RI: your screwed. 30 days after it fails the registration is pulled. That was no big deal really; The reinstatement fee was only $50....Yes $50. That fine was raised all the way to $500 last spring. ( Right before I upgraded the exhaust ! ) Once the car turns 25 year old you can do whatever you want to it, but before then be sure to keep all your Smog parts !
