Default Need to replace my A/C compressor

Has anyone ever replaced an A/C compressor on an LT1? Mine is leaking, just want to know how difficult it is before I dive into it.

it's kinda a pain in the dick, you have to take the acc. bracket off, to get to it, then u have to get the back bolts off that bolt the lines to the back of the compressor as well, and that bolt sucks. good luck man. mine was all fucked up so i ended up cutting it off lol

I won't say there easy but there not super tough. You don't need to remove the acc bracket if you have access to a lift and the back bolts are easiest to get to by renoving the starter and going in from the backside. Good luck. LT1=Fail

I'll almost certainly be doing it without a lift, so if I need to pull the accessory bracket so be it. Also, my Haynes manual says you hafta replace the receiver/dryer at the same time, is that absolutely necessary, even if I'm just putting in a used compressor?

Why is the compressor bad? If its internal and sendind metal threw the system the reciever dryer is what will hold that metal and kill the new/used compressor id change it for sure!

The only thing wrong with the compressor is that it's leaking. If I recharge the system the A/C blows cold again until the refrigerant leaks out again. So I have no reason to suspect internal damage.

Everytime you refill it are you using oil. And if so do you vac out the old and filling it with the proper amount of oil each time? If you aren't doing all of the above on every fill you are most certainly hurting the compressor. Wich in turn will leave fillings and build up behind. Would you change the oil in your car and leave the old oil filter in the car?

Alex all you need is time and tools. I did mine in 2008 when I got the car with the nose about a foot or a lil more off the ground and laying in the dirt. I'd say just go in there and start loosening up all the shit around it to make it easier. I just started taking things off and then I was like "oooooooh sooo thats where the bolts are...." Mine was seized up so I got a new one. Hell yes for A/C <3
