To each his own, but my A/C is staying, so back on topic.

The refrigerant I've recharged it with has oil in it, so I should be good there. I'm pretty sure all the refrigerant they sell at parts stores actually has oil in it.

Even if your compressor hasn't shot chunks into the dryer you should replace it. Losing charge means a leak to atmosphere. The dryer will absorb every bit of moisture and non-condensable gas until it is saturated while at exposed to atmosphere. This will make your system run hot and inefficient even with a new compressor (it'll blow cold but you are seriously shortening the life span). Because you have already used OTC cans you have charged oil int the low side (thats where those POS things hook up) which means your system also is overladen with oil and most likely in the dryer too. So to get it up to snuff you'll have to replace the compressor, dryer, and have it properly evacuated/charged.

I'm a universal tech that has done units worth that would pay for 200 new ZR-1s

So the proper procedure would be: Replace compressor and dryer, evacuate system, recharge. Correct? And I assume the evacuation and recharge pretty much needs to be done by a shop?

Yes a shop will have to evac and charge. It's cheaper than having to go through it again prematurely

Mehh vaccing it out is a good idea if you have catastrofic failure. I would just make sure you don't leave the system open for too long. Swap it all out make sure you fill the compressor with. Th e right amount of fluid and run it

Will it work ? Yes, but with a shorter life. Any air in the system is going to cause failure much earlier in the systems life.
