The correct way to check them is a dial gauge on the rocker over the pushrod.

Also since its a 99. There is a 3 wire plug on the pass side...

You don't have to pull caps and heads off.

I run a stock ported(by us) LS6 oil pump on the race car.

Upgrade the converter and tranny first. That should eat up most of the budget.
